"Self-directed" and "Truly Self-Directed" are merely industry terms that indicate that you are working with a custodian who will allow you greater control over the investment decisions that affect the IRA.
In most cases, IRAs that are called "Self-Directed" but that are handled by major broker dealers will limit you to a range of publicly traded investment options such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Tom can work with you to select an account custodian that allows for non-publicly traded assets like the real estate that Livtopia offers or even private placements, pre-IPO stock, Limited Liability Company membership, or a Limited Partnership. From there the options and the rewards only get better.
The most important thing is to work with a custodian that allows you to control your LLC's checkbook, so that investments can be made straight-away. Profits from the investment will go straight back into the IRA, but you'll see that those profits are far higher than what you'll get from the stock market or mutual funds. At age 59.5, you can even choose to enjoy the property yourself.
