Campeche, Mexico
Campeche is the name of both a city and a state. The state of Campeche is located on the Yucatan Peninsula, along some of southern Mexico’s most beautiful coastlines. In the south the state is bordered by the Caribbean Sea. The city of Campeche, an ancient Mayan town, is in the north end of the state on the Gulf of Mexico. A contemporary city, Campeche retains all its rich traditions and magical culture from its early days. The bastions and remains of its colonial walls have been converted into historical monuments, museums and gardens.
Prices for heritage buildings in the city of Campeche range from approximately US$150,000 to over $815,000. Most of these buildings need restoration, depending on the use to which they’ll be put. Be aware that any work done on these buildings must be pre-approved by Mexico’s National Institute of History and Anthropology, because of Campeche’s designation as a Mexican and World Heritage site.
Prices for homes outside the downtown historical district vary depending on location, but good three-bedroom homes can be found for approximately US$100,000. Residential lots in some areas may cost between US$0.68 per square foot and US$6 per square foot, depending on the location and services available.
