Huatulco, Mexico
The Bahías de Huatulco sit just to the east of Puerto Escondido, in the state of Oaxaca (wa-HAW-ka). Not a town as such, but a collection of bays and beaches, the Bahías de Huatulco were developed only fairly recently by Fonatur, Mexico’s tourism development agency, specifically as a resort area comparable with Cancun. Huatulco’s beaches are a riot of gorgeous blue-green water, splashing cheerfully over sand and huge boulders, against a backdrop of welcoming, green hills. Unlike many other locations in Mexico there is no colonial presence here but this absence does not seem to bother those who visit.
The Bahías de Huatulco are a series of 9 bays, and 36 beaches, stretching for 12 to 14 miles along the Pacific coast of Oaxaca state. Several parks and wildlife preserves surround the area and make it one of Mexico’s most successful tourist destinations. The natural environment of the bays and the natural life that the bays support evokes in the traveler or settler such Pacific island paradises as Maui or Tahiti.
Homes in and around Huatulco are generally new constructions and will sometimes command slightly higher prices. Condominiums can be relatively high-priced, at perhaps US$165,000- $400,000 depending on the size and distance from the sea. Many new developments are putting beautiful condos onto the market over the next couple of years. Freestanding homes with two to three bedrooms and an ocean view start at about US$350,000 and move up into the range of US$800,000, though smaller one-bedroom units can sometimes be found starting at US$200,000 or even slightly less.
