Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, Mexico

The beautiful towns of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are located southwest of Mexico City and northwest of Acapulco, on the Pacific coast of the state of Guerrero. This stunning area is known as the Mexican Riviera. Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, beautiful, picturesque tourist destinations, rest above low coastal foothills that slope steeply down to marvelous beaches.

A comfortable balance has been maintained between the towns’ unspoiled natural beauty and the local shopping, restaurants and nightlife which are extensive. Local regulations have prohibited the modern high-rise beach hotels that blight so many other vacation areas. These are ideal destinations for retirees interested in sailing, waterskiing, snorkeling, swimming, and surfing. Sport fishing, for dorado, marlin, barracuda, sailfish, or other deep-sea fish, is very popular here, and boats can easily be chartered at any time.

Ixtapa, having more modern developments, tends to have slightly higher prices than smaller Zihuatanejo which has a larger variety of homes on offer, from small and moderately sized homes in town to high-end beachfront condos.

In Ixtapa, condos with beachfront or beach access start at around US$135,000 for a one-bedroom, and rise to around US$435,000 for a three-bedroom. Family homes of three to five bedrooms in the Golf Club area go for about US$165,000-475,000. In the Marina area, homes with an ocean view sell for around US$365,000-491,000. Palm-tree covered lots just across from the beachfront start at US$40,000.

Generally speaking, ocean-view condos and homes cost about the same in Zihuatanejo as in Ixtapa. But stunning homes can also be found in the lush, green hills around Zihuatanejo, perhaps a 15 minute walk from the beach for just US$85,000 to US$120,000.
