La Paz, Mexico
La Paz rests on the southern end of Baja California, and with 163,000 people, is the state capital and principal city of the state of Baja California Sur. Only in the past 30 years has Baja California Sur really taken off, having been granted statehood in 1974. It has fewer colonial buildings than most of the cities of southern central Mexico, but there are a few precious gems remains. The city is generally restful and easygoing but can present the lively charm of the best beach towns of the Caribbean or the Pacific. La Paz offers all the peace and freedom of Pacific or Caribbean islands without the isolation or terrific expense.
Lots of new real estate developments are under way in La Paz so housing prices can vary considerably. Demand has recently skyrocketed but as a general rule there is a direct correlation between the distance to the beach and the price of the house. The closer you get to the seafront, the higher the prices. Other considerations, such as luxury and style, will also affect the price.
A condo near town, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a sea view, and 24-hour security, costs around US$230,000. In gated communities, prices range between US$100,000 and $300,000 or more, depending on the luxury and size of the home, and on geographical location. Freestanding homes or villas can be found scattered all over the coast, costing from between US$100,000 to $700,000 or more.
