Mérida, Mexico

Mérida is the capital city of the state of Yucatan, just east of Campeche on the Yucatan peninsula. Like Campeche, Mérida rests in a very important and colorful region with many ancient Mayan ruins within easy reach. Unlike the city of Campeche, Mérida is not on the ocean, though the drive is only about 20 minutes.

A city of 1 million people, it offers a wonderful mix of colonial history and sunny Caribbean cosmopolitanism. Surrounded by the former haciendas of the rich and powerful who once ruled the Yucatan from this shining city, Merida offers visitors and residents the intrigue of a unique and captivating side of Mexico, a place with a character and heart entirely its own.

One can choose from a colonial home in the city, or a hacienda surrounded by Mérida’s colorful flora, or a modern home near the golf course community just moments from the city. Prices have risen steadily over the last several years as Mérida only continues to grow in popularity. Still it offers truly attractive opportunities.

Prices vary in the city, depending upon the neighborhood. Colonial homes in the downtown area, with two or three rooms, range from US$50,000 to $75,000. Homes with more than five rooms can go for US$300,000 to $600,000. Mansions in the best districts can sell for prices between US$700,000 and US$1,000,000 or more. There are a wide variety of homes available at prices between these ranges.

Modern-style houses are found in the newer residential areas, particularly in the northern areas of the city. A wide variety of houses, ranging from small two bedroom homes for US$40,000 to US$300,000 for a four-five bedroom home.
