Puerto Escondido, Mexico

Puerto Escondido is a town of 40,000 in the state of Oaxaca (wa-HAW-ka) at the very southern end of Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Known to surfers worldwide as a prime surfing location, Puerto Escondido has only recently been touched by development. Little frequented until the 1960s and 1970s, when federal highways connected Puerto Escondido to the city of Oaxaca inland, and to Acapulco, up the coast. Huatulco, the fast-growing beach town is to the south. Since the 60s and 70s, the town has grown steadily but not inordinately, and is still considered a getaway. With no colonial history architecture tends to be more modern with a few condominiums rising in recent years. Since it is relatively isolated construction has been a bit more expansive. Instead of closet-sized condominiums, a few palm-trees on most lots and a private parking space make life in Puerto Escondido that much more comfortable.

Puerto Escondido, though a wonderful small beach town, still has fairly inexpensive land and homes. A two-bedroom home with an ocean view can be had for about US$95,000 to about US$200,000. Larger houses may run to US$500,000. For luxury, beachfront condominiums, you might spend US$250-375,000, but a condo off the ocean, still with an ocean view, can still be had for around US$100,000. Top of the line, luxury villas are also available, with five+ bedrooms and an ocean view, for about US$1,000,000, but beachfront lots can still be had for around US$35-40,000.
